THE WAY FORWARD

Mwalunganje actively solicits for funding through local and international non-profit agencies to service some of its activities as identified in the Sanctuary Management Plan.

Objectives

  • Maintenance of Sanctuary infrastructure (roads, gates, campsites, picnic sites, visitor information centre, etc.)
  • Procurement and maintenance of an economical vehicle
  • Marketing and publicity
  • Provision of uniforms for sanctuary personnel

USAID has helped Mwalunganje Elephant Sanctuary in developing a strategic marketing plan and to roll out its initial implementation; however more donor support is needed to fully implement the strategy. Without adequate funding to increase income allocations to land owners, the Sanctuary project can be dismantled at any time and the land reclaimed by the owners.

While seeking donor support the Sanctuary management will strive to achieve self-reliance and strengthen tourism in order to improve the revenue base for sustainability.

Mwalunganje Elephant Sanctuary has demonstrated their commitment to wildlife conservation and eco-tourism development and local community members still support the project and look for assistance to ensure its sustainability
